THE FEATHER KNOW WHY
It was early August 1993 and Larry Guidici and I were putting the finishing touches to the set for Know Theatres very first production; Tennessee Williams ‘Night of the Iguana’. As we were working, we talked this and that about theatre, our lives and our families. It turned out that we both had a family member who had never seen us on stage. For Larry it was his Mother and for me it was my brother Jim who died prematurely from Cancer. We had a certain sadness knowing they would not get to see the production we were about to perform.
Later, after wrapping our dress rehearsal, we gathered the cast in a circle on stage to go over final notes and preparations before our fledgling companies first opening night. As we sat talking, suddenly a pure white feather slowly fell and landed noiselessly directly in the center of our impromptu meeting. A shiver went through me as I watched this happening and when I looked up I saw Larry looking at me as gob-smacked as I obviously looked too. We both smiled and had to dab back a tear. From that night forward we were all convinced we had ‘special guests’ at all our performances, and will continue to do so as long as we perform. That’s why the ‘White Feather’ is synonymous with Know Theatre and is always used in our logo. We feel there is someone up there looking out for us.
